Stability and Fairness Issues in Layered Multicast

چکیده
Layered multicast is a promising technique for broadcasting adaptive-quality video to heterogeneous receivers. Past evaluation of layered multicast protocols has focused on the effectiveness of determining the maximal number of layers that can be delivered to each receiver. Unfortunately, this is only a partial metric and does not capture all aspects of the “viewing experience”. This paper extends past analysis by investigating stability of layered multicast schemes and the related issues of fairness and scalability. Our study is motivated by the desire to transmit small-scale TV broadcasts (hundreds or thousands of viewers) over IP-based networks with heterogeneous receivers. Although users are aware of their physical bandwidth limitations, they will still expect TV-like characteristics of their video such as consistent quality (i.e., stability). Our results shows that Receiver-Driven Layered Multicast (RLM) exhibits significant and persistent instability. Previous work also raises fairness as a potential problem with RLM. We show that with CBR traffic RLM can be arbitrarily unfair, but with VBR traffic, RLM provided better fairness than we anticipated. Our analysis of stability in RLM prompted us to question RLM’s ability to select the optimum number layers for a non-shared access link. We show that RLM is very conservative in its choice resulting in low link utilization.

Trade-off between fairness and stability in layered video multicast
Layered multicast is a promising technique for distributing video to a set of heterogeneous receivers. While several layered multicast approaches have been proposed, prior work usually perform adaptation on the receiver’s side and use static rate allocation techniques at the sender’s side. In this paper, we show an adaptation framework that improves stability and fairness of receivers by employ...
متن کاملA Rate Adaptation Scheme for Layered Multicast using MSS in Mobile Networks
Layered multicast was introduced to address the heterogeneity problem of network and receivers in multimedia multicast. With highly increasing interest of mobile communication, the need of extending layered multicast to mobile communications has been increased. However, the conventional layered multicast approaches have not considered host mobility, and a handoff can cause stability and fairnes...
متن کاملOn layered video fairness on IP networks
Abstract—In this paper, we present a study of layered video fairness on IP networks. Our study is based on simulation. We investigate some issues that have direct impact on fair allocation of bandwidth between layered video and TCP, in particular: a) Congestion control mechanisms employed by layered video transfer protocols. For this part we studied the interaction of RLM with TCP. b) The effec...
متن کاملExplicit Rate Adjustment (ERA): Responsiveness, Network Utilization Efficiency and Fairness for Layered Multicast
To provide layered multicast with responsiveness, efficiency in network utilization, scalability and fairness (including interprotocol fairness, intra-protocol fairness, intra-session fairness and TCP-friendliness) for layered multicast, we propose in this paper a new multicast congestion control, called Explicit Rate Adjustment (ERA). Our protocol uses an algorithm relying on TCP throughput eq...
متن کاملDiscrete bandwidth allocation considering fairness and transmission load in multicast networks
As a promising solution to tackle the network heterogeneity in multicasting, layered multicast protocols such as Receiver-driven layered multicast (RLM) and Layered video multicast with retransmission (LVMR) have been proposed. This paper considers fairness as well as transmission load in the layered multicasting. Lexicographically fair bandwidth allocation among multicast receivers is consider...
